Beverly

Nicole Jeffords (2021)

This is a quick drawing I did of my good friend, Beverly Kogut, whose birthday is today. She was one of the first people I met when I moved to Austin from New York City in 1991. At the time, I was totally confused — Austin still felt like a small town and I was a big-city girl. But Beverly, with her dry sense of humor, made me feel at home, and perhaps in a way it was due to her that I eventually got used to the idea of living in Texas. She’s so much fun! With her elegant Lauren Bacall good looks and manner, she is wonderful to hang out with, always making sure friends are comfortable with plenty to eat and drink, even if they’re only stopping by for a few minutes. And that’s the thing: if you go over to Beverly’s, you’ll run into all sorts of people (and their dogs —she’s a great animal lover) because she has such a large community of friends. She’s also a plant lover, with a beautiful garden and many, many pots of succulents. And a great cook! But above all, she’s a great friend, her phone always ringing with people needing help, advice, or just to be listened to. Believe me, I know because I’m always calling her up with some problem or other. And she’s always gracious enough to listen.
