Anna Delvey

Nicole Jeffords (2022)

This is a drawing of Anna Sorokin (Delvey), the East German con artist who, due to the attention thrust on her by the Netflix series, Inventing Anna, has become almost a household name to US audiences.

I’d never heard of Anna Sorokin before, and was enthralled by her story. Who was this person with the weird accent and the strange ability to exert power over people just with one or two stray remarks? A style criticism from her (“Your clothes are cheap and inferior.” “Your feet are too fat.”) was devastating. She was like the it girl, the most popular and desirable one, and if she had mean things to say about your looks, too bad for you.

Her habit of staying in posh hotels, charging everything to her room and living luxuriously until it was time for a quick exit because she didn’t have the money to pay, was utterly brazen. So was her way of penetrating the spheres of the wealthy, gaining access to top lawyers and financiers in order to come up with the two hundred million she needed to fund her dreams. In a pinch, she would always refer to her uber wealthy father in Germany who purportedly would shut down her credit cards if he wasn’t happy with her.

I think I’ve said enough. Inventing Anna is a fascinating character study of a girl with a pathological need to be famous, admired and … well-dressed. Very watchable and the acting is terrific.
